    About JustHackIt

Have an idea: post a title and description of your idea and find people to start building it with.

Just want to hack: post a little bio and some contact info so fellow hackers can get in touch.

The idea: Outside of Silicon Valley, lots of hackers are interested in web startups but don't have a plethora of available co-founders to start a company with. Even if you know other hackers, often there are times when you want to start a project but your friends are busy. So the idea is to connect people who want to build something RIGHT NOW. Ideas can be simple 1 page websites or complex Google competitors. The main point is to just get started hacking with new people! Hopefully you'll meet your next co-founder or your 1 page website will be successful by itself. If you find out you don't work well with someone, try someone else. No pressure. The idea is to create a 24/7 startup weekend. (Check out startupweekend.com if you haven't heard of it before).

Why spend an hour a day reading HackerNews when you can spend that hour hacking with new people? (Of course, I'll probably do both)

If you think this is a good idea, please let me know breck at breckyunits.com. If you think it's terrible, also please let me know. I spent 1 hour and $7 on it so I won't feel bad.

Streamish - the RSS reader for EVERYTHING

I am sick of tons of notifiers in my system tray, opening up gmail in one tab, gcal in another, twitter in another, running pidgin, remembering what files I have to edit today. I want a system for managing EVERYTHING i do on my computer in an orderly fashion so I can sit down at my computer, go through every item one at a time from beginning to end. I want to make an RSS reader that works with more than just RSS feeds. I want one list of everything that is happening in my digital life. When I get an email, it appears at the end of the list; when I get a chat request, it ends up at the end of the list; when a web site updates, it ends up at the end of the list. I want this program to be able to launch other programs with the contents of each item in the list; save the text of a website to a word document, open a chat with the URL of a post in my list. I want to be able to set up my own local streams with things like system information, or documents that need to be updated daily.

I am a CS major (junior) with some intern experience with C and low level programming (wrote a boot-loader utility). I don't have much experience with web-tool api's or ajax or anything, which I would imagine I would need to write plugins for a tool like this, and I am looking for people who would either help me, or point me in the right direction.

    Be a JustHackIt Co-founders

Alright so two things have become clear to me over the past 2 days:

    1) There is a huge demand for JustHackIt.
    2) I picked a bad (busy) week to launch it, and can't build it all myself.

So if anyone wants to join the team, please shoot me an email breck7@gmail.com.

As far as equity goes, I say we do a week-long trial and decide whether it's a good fit at the end of next week. In the rare event that the site is sold before then, 100% will go to charity.

Currently the site is using SlinkSet. I'm thinking to switch to something PHP or Python based so that we have more control over the features.

social network/ Project Manager for Makers/Hackers

I have had this idea for a couple of years and have not been able to implement it on my own. I thought JustHackThis had implemented my idea, it is similar but does not have the project management/social networking features.

    Idea:
A combination of Sourceforge, facebook/myspace and a little project managment but not limited to just code. You can upload schematics, cad drawings or even a scan of a napkin drawing. Let others see your projects and see if they want to help out (this feature is similar to this site)

Instructables has a collaboration feature but the whole site seems to more aimed at telling others than sharing ideas and accomplishing them.
Comicspace.com is a similar idea based around the comic book creation.

Providing a place for computers to track meaning and reason about it (making computers smarter!) (thoughttrail.com)

I have mostly built a semantic platform in Python, with me and a friend.
    We have been in Techcrunch.

We get the text off the screen and let users do related stuff.
MiniBrowser shows related information for Instant Messenger users in one click. (Built, cross-platform - I use Ubuntu, but obviously most people use Win).

We have a nice business model too. We're going to turn the world on it's head. You're looking at the next Google, or at least a good acquisition target. If you'd like to use your super-powers to help out, step aboard. Also, we will be releasing an SDK shortly, and rich documentation. We want to be the Firefox of contextual-search, and semantic applications. See our OLD pitch here. Or a bunch of different mockups here.

    Some things we've already coded:
We can reuse webcontent like this: getWebXpath("http://google.com/ie?q="+query, "/html/body/nobr/a/@href")

We can also reason about how inter-related given topics are:
    >>> getRelatedness("infected mushroom", "mdma")
    51.57%
    >>> getRelatedness("luke stanley", "thoughttrail")
    79.91%

The AI platform will only get more sophisticated, as people add more plug-ins to it, pretty much like they do with Firefox extensions. We are into recursive programming, actor based programming, clustering, cellular programming, and all sorts of good stuff.

email: luke at thoughttrail dot com Skype: fluxorz.

We like to code using Gobby over Skype and Instant Messenger. But being based in the UK, would be a bonus. However, we will likely be moving to the Bay Area soon.

    Join the Google Group!

    JustHackIt Suggestions

Hi guys, founder of JustHackIt here. I'm really excited by the number of users that have joined in less than 24 hours. It seems there are some really smart people posting. Already I've heard that a few people have begun working on projects together.

Now that our user base and activity is picking up, what can we do to make this site more useful for the people on it? Would you like to see a common format for postings evolve? Do you want to get an IRC or meebo chat room going? Should we try to get a contest started?

Please submit any ideas you have here or shoot me an email breck7@gmail.com.

Looking for other lone wolf hackers.

Where I live (middle of England) there are next to no hackers (who I know of anyway), so I'm a lone hacker, nobody I talk too personalty on a regular basis is anywhere near what I would call a hacker. Its really quite lonely, great ideas, silly ideas, all stuck in my head with little output.

So what would be cool is a small group of hackers with a private IRC channel (or Campfire) to throw ideas around, build stuff together and basically just talk about hacker stuff on a day to day basis.

I don't call myself an amazing hacker, but I love to learn. My main language at the moment Ruby.

So any other lone hackers out there?!

    Interesting web ideas.

Hi. I am a web developer with plenty of experience in delivering enterprise standard webapps. My core technology is j2ee. However, I am more of a technocrat - python, ruby, rails, ajax, photoshop, etc etc you name it - my answer would be 'been there done that'. I am looking forward to meeting and hearing from like minded people with creative ideas. I would love to help out on any of your projects (though I work in a 8 hour tech job, I find myself enough time to work on exciting and new stuff) that you are already working on / would like to start with. Do write to me kill(dot)segfault at gmail!

Topic Models, Vectoral Semantics, and Discussion Boards

I am interested in applying vectoral semantics topic models (e.g. LDA) to threaded message boards (e.g. most blogs, usenet, reddit, digg, HN etc.)

Things I would like to try:

    (1) classify users based on the topics of their comments and or the topics of their parent or child messages.

    (2) see if any of the topics can be used to make meaningful classifications of user tastes and values (this has already been done using decision trees to estimate the demographic identity of bloggers)

    (3) see if there is any "phylogenetic structure" in the topics of a message thread. Is it possible to automatically identify which topics are most likely to provoke indignant responses or which topics are most likely to provoke puns or one liners?
Models like the Kingman coalescent seem applicable.

My strategy is to approach this as a research project. I have a decent amount of experience in C++ and python for scientific / numerical applications, but my CS background is weak. I'd like to talk to a more hardcore CS person with AI / ML experience to give my work some better feedback. I would prefer to work with python or Ocaml.

This is very much a background / side project.

    web page / site classification

I'm looking to create a website classification tool which will take web pages (downloaded from the internet) and try to classify them based on learning patterns or some other method not determined as yet. I think there are Bayes algorithms, but wanting to explore this with someone to see if we can create something generic that can be plugged into other tools. If interested, let me know

Looking for a programmer co-founder in Germany (best in Munich, Bremen or Hamburg)

    Hi all,
we are a web 2.0 start up that provides professional musicians a secure market place to sell their intellectual property rights on music pieces. Our business concept is unique so far (no copy cat) and we have an unfinished beta version ready. However we do not have a programmer in our team yet, but paid developers for our beta. We now look for a programmer to join our team and become a co-founder. Our team is based in Germany and we have people in Munich and Bremen. If you are a programmer with special interest in music and looking for a project to join and found a company, you might want to contact us. We look for someone who is dedicated to create something new with us and who is highly skilled in programming Java, PHP and eventually AJAX.
If someone matches these criterias and is interested in hearing more, contact us at: colin.kippenberg (at) emerigo.com
    Thanks!

Have you ever wanted to voice a cartoon character? (www.youtube.com)

I am trying to put together a South Park style cartoon based on the "fringe" elements of U.S. Politics. If you are a politics/conspiracy junkie, and would like to provide the voice of a character, please send me a message. All you need is the ability record mp3s of yourself, and a sense of humor.

I've linked you to the "teaser trailer" of the upcoming episode. If you recognize the characters, this project is perfect for you.

I would like to turn this from a pet-project into something more collaborative. If you are intrigued, please don't be shy.

    Niche targeted search engine

Looking for a technical co-founder located in the US with the skills to build a prototype search engine that can aggrevate and crawl through specific blogs/infomation sites on the web. I already have design/layout of how I want the search engine, just don't have the main ingredient--coding skills. This niche targeted search engine has not been executed and is guaranteed to go far.The targeted niche is growing at a rapid pace and will only continue to grow due to new technology, new competitors and high demand. Sorry for beinng so vague but will discuss more when I recieve feedback/responses. Email me @ valdezdailey@gmail.com.
